Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence passed for five touchdowns and also tallied a rushing score in Sunday’s 48-20 win over the lowly New York Jets (3-11) that improved the Jaguars to 10-4 on the season.
For a piece published on Monday, Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. spoke with Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated and explained how first-year head coach Liam Coen may be getting the best out of Lawrence’s talents with the playoffs quickly approaching.
Liam Coen has Trevor Lawrence “locked in” for first-place Jaguars
“The way he’s seeing the field, that totally stems from coach Coen — he’s just locked in,” Etienne said about Lawrence. “The game’s slowed down for him. He has a great understanding of the game plan and what coach wants.”
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield passed for a career-high 41 touchdowns when Coen was Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator during the 2024 season. While Lawrence has produced some shaky performances during the ongoing campaign, Sunday gave Jacksonville fans a glimpse of what could be to come for the organization.
Against the Jets, Lawrence completed 20-of-32 passes for 330 yards. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville offense scored on eight of its first nine series. According to StatMuse, Lawrence ended the weekend tied for fourth in the NFL with 29 combined passing and rushing scores on the season.
The Jaguars will head into Week 16 leading the 9-5
Houston Texans and the 8-6 Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South standings. Jacksonville trails the 11-3 New England Patriots and the 12-2 Denver Broncos in the battle for the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed.
Liam Coen maximizing the potential of Jaguars playmakers
As for Etienne, he recorded three receptions for 73 yards and three touchdowns in the blowout victory over the Jets.
“It’s coaches understanding our skill set and using our potential, maximizing each and every guy by finding mismatches out on the field,” Etienne said about his performance. “[Coen’s] doing a great job seeing things. He has done a great job of calling the plays.”
Etienne and Co. will have an opportunity to make a statement when the Jaguars play at the Broncos on Dec. 21. As of Monday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had Jacksonville as a three-point road underdog for that game.
