The Trent Rockets kicked off their campaign in The Hundred Men’s Competition with a convincing 47-run victory over the Northern Superchargers at Headingley, Leeds, on July 26. The Rockets set a challenging target of 186 runs, which the Superchargers failed to chase down, managing only 138 for 8 in their 100 balls.
Winning the toss, the Northern Superchargers opted to field first. The Rockets’ innings got off to a steady start with Adam Lyth scoring 12 runs off 12 balls before being caught by Nicholas Pooran off Ben Dwarshuis. Tom Banton was the star of the innings, smashing 66 runs off 38 balls, including nine fours and a six. His aggressive batting laid a solid foundation for the Rockets.
Despite losing Alex Hales early, who contributed just 6 runs, Sam Hain bolstered the innings with a quickfire 49 off 28 balls. Chris Green provided a spectacular finish, remaining unbeaten on 25 runs off just 7 balls, hitting one four and three sixes. The Rockets ended their innings at 185 for 5, setting a formidable target for the Superchargers.
The Superchargers’ chase got off to a shaky start with early wickets falling at regular intervals. Ollie Robinson, who scored 25 runs off 17 balls, was the only top-order batsman to show some resistance. Imad Wasim and Chris Green wreaked havoc on the Superchargers’ batting lineup, with Green taking 3 wickets for just 14 runs in his 20 balls.
Graham Clark, the captain Matthew Short, and Nicholas Pooran failed to make significant contributions, scoring 17, 4, and 10 runs respectively. The middle order crumbled under pressure, with Adam Hose and Michael Jones scoring only 4 and 7 runs. Ben Dwarshuis played a lone hand towards the end, scoring an unbeaten 40 off 20 balls, but it was too little too late. The Superchargers finished their innings at 138 for 8, falling 47 runs short of the target.
Chris Green was named the Player of the Match for his all-round performance. He scored a rapid 25 not out off 7 balls and took 3 crucial wickets for 14 runs, playing a pivotal role in the Rockets’ victory.
