Tuchel warns Foden that World Cup spot with England not a guarantee

England manager Thomas Tuchel has warned that Phil Foden is not guaranteed a place in his World Cup squad following a mixed international break.

The Manchester City midfielder started both matches in England’s final camp before squad selection, but struggled to make an impact in the absence of Harry Kane during the defeat to Japan.

Used in a false nine role, Foden was unable to influence proceedings before being replaced just before the hour mark.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel cast doubt over the 25-year-old’s inclusion.

“Well, it’s not a guarantee that he will come.”

Despite praising his work off the pitch, the England boss suggested Foden has not translated that form into matches.

“Obviously he didn’t have a lot of minutes for City recently, then he came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training.

“And I thought he will just surprise us and will play with the same verve and excitement but, yeah, he struggles to have the full impact.”

England must submit their final squad to FIFA by the end of May, with their tournament set to begin against Croatia.

Foden’s recent club form may also be a concern. He has started only a handful of matches in recent months and has not scored since mid-December, a downturn that comes after a prolific spell earlier in the season.

Tuchel turned to Dominic Solanke during the second half against Japan instead.
