‘Dream gives birth to change.’

As Boria Majumdar, a cricket historian, a Rhodes Scholar, and the founder and editor-in-chief of RevSportz, shared his thoughts on his difficult times at the newly opened studio, the above-mentioned line echoed several times in the mind.

Boria da, as he is affectionately called at RevSportz, said: “It was October 2021. I was doing commentary for the ICC. I was fed up with the work I was doing. In my previous work stints, when I would say, ‘The Olympics are coming, the Paralympics are coming,’ I would be shot down. I was the lone voice.

“Sharmistha (Gooptu) and I – my wife – are not business people. It was like, ‘Do we have the money to do it? Do we have the wherewithal to do it?’ I called Vinod, I called Ashok. The four of us sat in a hotel, and I said, ‘I am actually done.’ Having said that, we thought, ‘Let’s do something’ – something about building an entity that concentrates on different sports.

“On 1 December, RevSportz was born, in a room in my house. In four years, we have tried to make a difference to Indian sport. Yogesh (Kathuniya) will testify to that. For the Paralympics, there were eight Indian journalists – six of them were from RevSportz.”

The quote essentially serves as the crux of RevSportz’s vision – to give equal importance to all Indian sports, including niche disciplines, and not just cricket, which is akin to a religion in India. Over the past four years, RevSportz has grown in stature and produced several ground-breaking stories across the length and breadth of the Indian sporting landscape.

On March 15, another milestone was achieved for RevSportz when Pullela Gopichand, former All England champion and renowned coach, Yogesh Kathuniya, para-athlete, and Dola Banerjee, former archer, cut the ribbon to inaugurate the studio at Madan Mohan Tala Street in Kolkata.

For his part, Boria also showered praise on Gopichand, noting how he encouraged him to conduct an interview even when he was serving a ban.

Four years ago, RevSportz was just a root facing numerous challenges. That root has not only overcome setbacks but has also blossomed into a home where aspiring sports journalists can dream big. With the opening of the studio, that dream has grown even bigger.
