Venkatesh Iyer reveals his discussion with the KKR management for captaincy role

In the dynamic world of cricket, where talent meets opportunity, Venkatesh Iyer has emerged as a significant figure following the recent IPL 2025 mega auction. The all-rounder was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a staggering INR 23.75 crore, making him the fourth-costliest player in IPL history. This monumental moment not only highlights his individual prowess but also underscores the strategic decisions made by franchises in the ever-competitive landscape of T20 cricket.

A mutual loyalty affair between Venkatesh Iyer and KKR

Before the auction, Iyer expressed a deep desire to remain with KKR, the franchise that had nurtured his talent since his debut in 2021. In conversations with KKR management, he candidly conveyed his feelings, stating that he would be disheartened if he were not picked again.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore later confirmed this sentiment, revealing that Iyer’s passion for the team played a pivotal role in their bidding strategy.

“I had a word with him before the announcement of retentions. He was very clear in telling me that ‘we won’t be able to retain you because of the retention rules’ and not because they didn’t want me in KKR. So I told him, ‘Sir, if you have the option, and if you can, please do everything in your power to get me back to KKR’. It kind of worked, didn’t it? It goes to show how much he trusts and believes in me. I’d really like to thank him. Over the years, we have built a wonderful relationship. I actually felt really grateful,” Iyer told Indian Express, demonstrating his commitment to the franchise that had become synonymous with his cricketing identity.

The bidding war for Iyer

The auction itself saw an intense bidding war between KKR and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Both teams recognized Iyer’s potential and contributions, leading to a dramatic escalation in bids.

Obviously, when you see the paddle getting raised for you, you never want the paddle to stop getting raised. But after a point of time, I actually felt that both RCB and KKR were pushing for me. I think it goes to show how much trust KKR has in me. I was surprised, but at the same time, extremely happy. To be honest, I wanted to play for KKR. If it were in my hands, I would have loved to be retained. But that didn’t happen. I’m really happy that I’m back at KKR,” he added and reflected on the experience.

Ultimately, KKR emerged victorious, underscoring their belief in Iyer’s capabilities as a player.

Iyer on leadership of KKR

With such a significant investment in him, speculation arose regarding Iyer’s potential role as captain for IPL 2025. While some reports suggest that veteran Ajinkya Rahane may take the reins, Iyer’s comments indicate his readiness to embrace leadership responsibilities.

I’ve always maintained that I want to be a leader in any set-up that I walk into, be it Madhya Pradesh, an IPL team, or even the Indian team. Being a leader, you want to contribute with your ideas, with your suggestions. You don’t really need the captaincy tag for that. So I always want to be a leader in the dressing room. And if captaincy comes my way, it will be an honour to lead such a reputed franchise. Let’s see what’s in store for me,” Iyer stated, emphasizing that leadership transcends titles and is about contributing positively to team dynamics.

The all-rounder’s performance for KKR

Iyer’s performance during the IPL 2024 season further solidified his worth as an all-rounder. He scored 370 runs at an impressive average of 46.25 and showcased his ability to handle pressure with a strike rate exceeding 158. His contributions were instrumental in KKR’s title-winning campaign, including a memorable century against Mumbai Indians (MI). His consistent performances have made him a cornerstone of KKR’s strategy moving forward.
