Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva has made her most significant leap in this week’s WTA rankings. The 20-year-old broke into the top 100 for the first time and created history. She is Andorra’s first-ever top 100 singles player.
Who is Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva?
Jimenez Kasintseva was born in Andorra la Vella, which is Andorra’s capital and largest city. Her father, Joan Jiménez Guerra, is a former ATP player who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 505 in 1999, and serves as her primary coach.
Jimenez Kasintseva trains at her father’s tennis academy in Barcelona whenever she is away from the tour, splitting her time between Spain and Andorra.
Jimenez Kasintseva is a former junior World No. 1 who had a stellar career at that level. She shot to prominence when she won the 2020 Australian Open junior title and became World No. 1 at just 14 years of age.
Top 100 debut after reaching the Merida quarterfinals
Last week, Jimenez Kasintseva competed in the WTA 500 event in Merida, Mexico, where she won the fourth-longest WTA match of the season against Magda Linette in over three hours. She had battled through two rounds of qualifying before that and defeated a resurgent Yulia Putintseva in three sets in the main draw. Her impressive run came to an end in the quarterfinal stage, where she lost to Zhang Shuai. A positive week in Merida means that Jimenez Kasintseva has evened her win-loss record.
Despite falling short in the quarterfinals, it was a hugely successful week in southern Mexico for the left-handed Andorran. She snapped a three-match losing streak and ascended into the top 100. Andorra has an estimated population of 89,000 people and Jimenez Kastintseva is now the first tennis player, male or female, to achieve this historic ranking milestone (up to No. 97).
