Vinesh Phogat Appeals Against Olympics 2024 Disqualification

Vinesh Phogat, the celebrated Indian wrestler, has made headlines as she appeals against her disqualification from the gold medal bout in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling category at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The disqualification, which came as a shock to the nation, was due to her weighing 50.1 kg—just 100 grams over the stipulated limit—on the morning of the match.

Background of the Disqualification

Phogat had previously made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout, securing her place after an impressive performance that included defeating the world number one and defending champion, Yui Susaki. However, her dreams of clinching gold were dashed when she was found overweight during the weigh-in, resulting in a heartbreaking disqualification. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed that despite the team’s tireless efforts to help her meet the weight requirement, she ultimately fell short, leading to her exit from the competition without a medal to show for her efforts.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya addressed the Parliament, stating, “Today her weight was found 50 kg 100 grams and she was disqualified. The Indian Olympic Association has lodged a strong protest with the United World Wrestling (UWW).” The UWW, however, upheld the rules, emphasizing that any athlete found overweight at weigh-in must be disqualified, regardless of the circumstances.

In light of her disqualification, Vinesh Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for reinstatement in the gold medal match and has modified her plea to request a shared silver medal. The CAS is expected to deliver an interim ruling on August 8, which could potentially alter the outcome of her Olympic journey. If the ruling favors Vinesh, it would require the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to award her a joint silver medal, despite her disqualification.

The Aftermath and Reaction

The reaction to Vinesh’s disqualification has been one of shock and disappointment across India. Many had high hopes for her as she aimed to become the first Indian woman to win an Olympic gold medal. The situation has sparked discussions about the intense pressure athletes face regarding weight management in combat sports. Reports indicated that Vinesh had undergone rigorous training and even drastic measures, such as sauna sessions and attempts to cut her hair, to meet the weight requirement. Unfortunately, these efforts were not enough to bring her weight down to the necessary level.

In the wake of this incident, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has announced an investigation into the support staff involved in Vinesh’s preparation. WFI President Sanjay Singh stated that the responsibility for the missed weight lies not solely with Vinesh but also with her coaching team, emphasizing the need for accountability.
