Oliveira took a step up in competition on Saturday, and things
didn’t go as planned for the Brazilian prospect.
Oliveira was outclassed in the
UFC Vegas 113 main event, as he fell to Mario
Bautista via second-round submission at the UFC Apex in Las
Vegas. That snapped a four-bout promotional winning streak for
“LokDog,” who had an opportunity to enter the upper echelon of the
bantamweight division with a victory over the battle-tested
Bautista.
In the aftermath of his first
UFC, defeat Oliveira revealed that he suffered multiple
injuries leading up to the fight.
“Well, earthlings, things went wrong again,” Oliveira wrote on
Instagram. “I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve lost in my life,
but every time I’ve gotten up and moved on. I’m sad for my team and
for everyone who was cheering for me, but anyway, no sad stories,
let’s move on to another journey. I did the impossible, I dropped
below 84kg again, I had three injuries during this fight camp: a
rotator cuff injury, a meniscus injury, and also a fracture in my
arm, but I’m still the best, the terror has a name! Yeeeeeeah!”
In a separate interview with Ag.Fight, Oliveira went into more detail regarding the
fracture in his arm, which apparently hindered his performance in
the Octagon on Saturday.
“I could have canceled the fight,” Oliveira said (translation via
MMAFighting.com). “I broke my arm. There wasn’t
much I could do, but I decided to move forward. For a good while we
trained with my arm in a cast. It was actually a bit reckless on
our part. We kept it under wraps, but I was determined to fight
regardless of the injury.”

Bautista grounded Oliveira in the first round, and if it seemed
like the Brazilian didn’t make much effort to return to his feet —
there was a reason for that.
“I got taken down and couldn’t do the shield to get back up because
that was exactly where it hurt,” he added. “I tried, but it hurt
too much. I said in between round that it was hurting. We went on
through the pain, but it was really bad. I started throwing jabs,
but even just the movement of punching air hurt a lot.”
Oliveira revealed that he received a 180-day medical suspension
from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He added that he
struggled with his weight cut due to the injury issues.
“It was the worst weight cut of my career because I couldn’t train
properly, and that made it harder to lose the weight,” Oliveira
said. “I had to train moderately. I couldn’t do cardio because any
movement of my arm hurt.”
