Former Indian fast bowler Ashish Nehra believes there won’t be any issues between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir when they start sharing the team locker room again. Gambhir is set to become the India coach starting with the Sri Lanka tour, during which Kohli will be part of the One Day International team. Although they had disagreements during the Indian Premier League, they appeared to have resolved their differences by the 2024 season, as they were seen having friendly chats.
Gambhir stopped the discussion about his relationship with Kohli in his initial media briefing, and Nehra believes there won’t be any tension between them in the team locker room. In an interview with Sports Tak, the ex-fast bowler mentioned that both Gambhir and Kohli are very enthusiastic individuals. Nehra thinks that when they join the Indian team, they will focus on supporting the team together.
“Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir are both very enthusiastic players. When they play for a team, they can be very competitive against the other side. However, when they are in the same team room, they work together for the team’s success. Virat Kohli has been playing for over 16-17 years, and Gautam Gambhir is also very experienced. People might form opinions based on what they see outside. But it’s not just about Gambhir and Kohli; many players have had disagreements on the field in the past. Yet, when they play together for a team, they perform well as players, as coach-captains, as coaches, and as senior players,” said Nehra.
Nehra also mentioned that Gambhir is always honest and open, and he always says what he thinks.
“Gautam Gambhir is honest and open, which is really good. He keeps things simple and says what he thinks. That’s very important. Yes, I agree, everyone has their own way of coaching, working with the coach, captain, and player. I don’t see any problem with these two and where they are in their careers,” said Nehra.
India will begin their tour of Sri Lanka on July 27 with the T20I series. Kohli is expected to join the team before the ODI series starts on August 2.
