In a development that marks the end of a golden chapter in Indian cricket, Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect on Monday.

The 36-year-old batting stalwart, who debuted in 2011, leaves behind a storied red-ball legacy built on excellence, consistency, and fierce competitiveness. The announcement comes just ahead of India’s five-Test tour of England in June, catching fans and pundits off guard.

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life.” Virat wrote on his Instagram account.

Virat Kohli’s red-ball legacy and leadership

Virat Kohli’s Test career is one that redefined the modern Indian batting ethos. In 123 matches over 14 years, he amassed 9230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 27 centuries, placing him fourth among India’s all-time Test run-scorers.

Between 2010 and 2019, Kohli was arguably the face of India’s dominance in international cricket, finishing as the third-highest Test run-getter globally during that decade.

Kohli’s impact extended beyond the bat. Taking over the Test captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2014, he led India through a transformative era.

In 68 Tests as captain, Kohli registered 40 wins, the most by any Indian captain and built a team that excelled overseas, emphasized fitness, and valued aggression with discipline. Globally, only Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh have more Test wins as skippers.

“As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for. I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way.” Kohli’s post read.

While the timing may surprise many, Kohli’s heartfelt farewell message expressed gratitude for his journey, his teammates, and the millions of fans who supported him. His departure from Test cricket leaves a void not easily filled, but also a legacy that will inspire generations.
