India have made a clear plan for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as they focus only on ODIs now.
Both senior stars, who have stepped away from Tests and T20Is, will play nine home ODIs in the 2026–27 season. This is part of India’s build-up for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.
The tournament will be held across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, and the board wants both players in top rhythm.
Over a 12-month period, Kohli and Rohit are expected to feature in around 18 ODIs. The idea is simple, keep them fresh, focused and match-ready.
Home Season Sets the Tone
India’s home season begins with a three-match ODI series against West Indies cricket team. This will be followed by five T20Is, though Kohli and Rohit will not be part of that format anymore.
Next, Sri Lanka national cricket team tour India in December 2026 for three ODIs and three T20Is. Soon after, Zimbabwe national cricket team will play a three-match ODI series in January 2027.
These nine ODIs at home will give India a strong base before heading into the World Cup year.
Packed Calendar Across Formats
India’s schedule is not limited to ODIs. There is a busy mix of all formats across the cycle.
After IPL 2026, India will host Afghanistan national cricket team for a one-off Test and three ODIs. They will also travel to England for three ODIs and five T20Is.
In addition, India will play two away Tests in Sri Lanka and host New Zealand national cricket team for a full series with Tests, ODIs and T20Is.
Big Test Challenge Against Australia
One of the biggest highlights of the season will be the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia national cricket team.
The five-Test series will run from January 21 to March 3, 2027, across Nagpur, Chennai, Guwahati, Ranchi and Ahmedabad.
While Kohli and Rohit are no longer part of the Test setup, this series will still be a major moment in India’s cricket calendar.
Clear Focus on World Cup Goal
The overall schedule shows a clear direction from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. India want their two most experienced batters fully ready for the biggest ODI event.
With regular matches, familiar conditions and careful workload management, Kohli and Rohit will be central to India’s World Cup plans.
