In a significant leadership transition for Indian cricket, Shubman Gill is poised to become the new captain of the Indian Test team, with Rishabh Pant expected to be named his deputy. So Let’s take a look at Virat Kohli test retirement update.

The move comes in the wake of Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket and growing uncertainty around Jasprit Bumrah’s availability due to fitness concerns and workload management.

Pant, one of India’s most dependable performers in overseas Test matches, is the frontrunner for the vice-captaincy. With an average of over 42 in Tests and centuries in Australia, England, and South Africa, Pant has established himself as a reliable match-winner in challenging conditions.

Though Jasprit Bumrah is the current vice-captain, selectors are reportedly leaning toward Pant, given Bumrah’s injury history and the need to manage his workload across formats. His unpredictable availability has made it difficult to entrust him with a formal leadership role.

Virat Kohli to lead India in Test cricket?

Meanwhile, the cricketing world has been caught off guard by reports of Virat Kohli contemplating retirement from Test cricket. Although there was internal discussion about asking Kohli to lead the side in the upcoming England series to allow Gill more time to settle, no official announcement has been made.

The BCCI is expected to urge Kohli to play the five-Test series in England, given the challenging conditions and the void left by Rohit Sharma’s departure.

While Gill has had an inconsistent Test run so far, averaging around 35, he is being seen as a long-term leadership prospect. His captaincy experience with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL and his role as vice-captain during India’s ICC Champions Trophy win have helped bolster his credentials. He is likely to take charge ahead of the new World Test Championship cycle, which kicks off with the crucial England tour this summer.

The Indian squad for the England series is expected to be announced in the third week of May, while the India A team will be revealed early next week. The five-match test series between India and England will begin from June 20.
