Warriors smash 400 to stay top

The EP Warriors, Central Gauteng Lions and North West Dragons were victorious in the One-Day Cup this past weekend.

The race for top spot continues to intensify, with the Warriors leading the standings on 19 points and the Lions close behind on 18.

Both sides secured victories over the weekend, while the North West Dragons also strengthened their playoff hopes with an impressive win.

The Warriors produced a dominant batting display to defeat Boland by 87 runs after posting a mammoth 400-5 in their 50 overs in Paarl on Saturday.

After electing to bat, the Warriors’ top order laid a solid platform through Muhammad Manack, who struck 57 off 61 balls. Modiri Litheko then anchored the innings superbly with 117 off 115 deliveries (nine fours, four sixes).

The innings exploded in the latter stages thanks to a breathtaking knock from Matthew de Villiers, who hammered 133 off just 77 balls (17 fours, five sixes). Late contributions from Patrick Kruger (36) and Jean du Plessis (28) propelled the Warriors to the 400 mark.

Boland’s chase showed promise through Blayde Capell (94) and Gavin Kaplan (88), but the target ultimately proved too steep as they were bowled out for 313 in 44.5 overs.

Kerwin Mungroo (3-58) and Gideon Peters (3-61) led the Warriors’ bowling effort, while Senuran Muthusamy claimed two wickets to seal the win.

In the Jukskei derby at the Wanderers on Sunday, the Lions kept the pressure on the Warriors with a convincing 120-run victory (DLS method) over the Northerns Titans.

Batting first, the Lions reached 165-2 in 32.3 overs before rain intervened. Reeza Hendricks anchored the innings with 82*, while Temba Bavuma added 43* and Rassie van der Dussen 22.

In reply, the Titans struggled to gain momentum and were dismissed for 114 in 21 overs.

The Lions’ bowlers shared the spoils, with Bjorn Fortuin (3-33) and Nqaba Peter (3-35) striking key blows. Hendricks also made an unusual contribution with the ball, claiming 3-11 to wrap up the innings.

On Saturday, the North West Dragons delivered a commanding all-round performance to defeat the KZN Dolphins by 134 runs in Durban.

After electing to bat first, the Dragons posted 272-8, powered by a superb 88 from Lesiba Ngoepe and a valuable 48 from Ruan de Swardt. Janneman Malan contributed 45 at the top of the order.

The Dolphins’ chase never gained traction as the Dragons’ bowlers applied relentless pressure. Onke Nyaku starred with 4-32, while Caleb Seleka matched the effort with 4-23 to bowl the hosts out for 138 in 37.1 overs.

At Newlands on Sunday, Wayne Parnell produced a match-winning performance to guide the KZN Inland Tuskers to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Western Province.

Province were bowled out for 269 in 47.1 overs, with Jiveshan Pillay leading the way with 114 off 132 balls, while David Bedingham added a quick-fire 42 off 26.

The Tuskers’ chase got off to a shaky start after Dane Paterson ripped through the top order with figures of 5-34, leaving the visitors under pressure.

However, Parnell held the innings together with 89* off 78 balls, sharing a crucial partnership with Ntandoyenkosi Zuma, who contributed 51 off 42.

The pair steadied the chase before the Tuskers reached 274-8 to seal an impressive comeback victory.
