Former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram has declined the offer to become the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) due to personal commitments. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had created this role, akin to that of an advisor, to delegate certain cricketing matters preferably to a former cricketer.
According to a report by Cricket Pakistan, Naqvi faced criticism for neglecting his role as PCB Chairman, since he also serves as the Federal Minister of Interior. The newly established role of CEO entails overseeing every cricketing matter in the country, necessitating a full-time commitment.
Due to his existing commitments as a commentator, pundit, and his frequent travel to Australia for personal reasons, Akram chose to recuse himself from consideration. The position also required relocation to Lahore, which Akram did not prefer as he is settled in Karachi.
However, Akram, during his meeting with Naqvi, expressed his willingness to assist Pakistan cricket on an unofficial basis without compensation. Akram stated, “I would be more than happy to assist Pakistan cricket on an unofficial basis without compensation.”
The report also mentions that the PCB Chairman outlined his plans and vision for Pakistan cricket, which Akram found impressive. Despite his admiration for Naqvi’s vision, Akram’s personal commitments made it difficult for him to accept the full-time role.
In light of Akram’s decision, the PCB turned to another former cricketer, Waqar Younis, for the advisory role. Waqar, who has served in various capacities within the Pakistan coaching staff numerous times before, agreed to the terms and began his stint on August 1.
A source told Cricbuzz, “The PCB believed there was a need for an experienced individual who understands the language of cricketers and is capable of making the right decisions, which is why Waqar was brought on board.”
The source further added, “In addition, Waqar will also address any matters or assignments deemed appropriate by the PCB chairman that require his attention or expertise.”
Pakistan’s next international assignment is a two-match Test series against Bangladesh as part of the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. With Waqar Younis now in an advisory position, the PCB hopes to leverage his experience and insight to further strengthen the team’s performance.
While the PCB navigates these administrative changes, the focus remains steadfast on achieving excellence on the field. The upcoming series against Bangladesh will be a crucial test for the team, and the PCB’s new leadership structure aims to provide the necessary support to the players.
