WATCH: Rovman Powell pulls off a sensational diving catch to dismiss Shimron Hetmyer in CPL 2024

During the 27th match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024, Rovman Powell’s outstanding fielding went in vain as Barbados Royals (BR) lost to Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) by 47 runs. One of the most pivotal moments of the match came during the 15th over of the Royals’ chase, when Powell took a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Shimron Hetmyer, who was in blistering form.

Rovman Powell executes a stunning diving catch

The incident unfolded as Keshav Maharaj bowled a slower, wider delivery outside off-stump to Hetmyer, who attempted a slog-sweep. The ball, coming off the toe end of Hetmyer’s bat, seemed destined to land short of long-on. However, Powell, the Barbados Royals skipper, charged forward, diving full length and getting both hands underneath the ball. His brilliant catch ended Hetmyer’s crucial innings of 57 runs off 34 balls, which included four boundaries and three sixes. The dismissal provided much-needed relief for the Royals, though it ultimately wasn’t enough to turn the tide of the match.

Powell was a standout fielder throughout the contest, completing four catches and being involved in a run-out of Romario Shepherd with the assistance of wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.

Guyana Amazon Warriors posts a formidable total

Earlier in the match, Guyana Amazon Warriors set a daunting target of 220 runs after posting 219/8 in their 20 overs. Wicket-keeper batter Shai Hope played a pivotal role in GAW’s innings, smashing 71 off just 37 balls. His knock featured five boundaries and five towering sixes, anchoring the team’s strong performance. Hope was well-supported by Hetmyer, who added a quickfire half-century to push the total beyond 200.

In response, the Barbados Royals could only manage 172/9 in their 20 overs, falling 47 runs short of the target. David Miller emerged as the lone warrior for the Royals, launching a counter-attack with an unbeaten 71 off 34 balls, including eight fours and five sixes. However, despite his valiant efforts, Miller found little support from the rest of the batting lineup as wickets tumbled around him.

For his exceptional batting display, Hope was awarded the Player of the Match. His powerful innings set the tone for the Guyana Amazon Warriors’ dominant performance, ensuring they remained in contention for the top spots in the CPL standings.
