In a tense finale, Indian fielder Suryakumar Yadav‘s sensational catch in the first delivery of the final over bowled by Hardik Pandya turned the tide decisively. With South Africa needing 16 runs off six balls, Hardik was entrusted with defending the total. David Miller, batting aggressively at 21 off 16, attempted a big shot over long off but miscued it. Suryakumar, stationed at long off, pulled off a stunning catch under pressure, dismissing Miller and revitalizing India’s chances and that ultimately resulted in India’s historic win.

Virat Kohli and Axar Patel lead India’s recovery

Earlier in the innings, India had faced a rocky start, losing crucial wickets early. At 34 for three, Virat Kohli and Axar Patel steadied the ship with a resilient partnership. Kohli played a controlled innings, scoring 76 off 59 balls, while Axar played the aggressor, contributing 47 runs off just 31 deliveries. Their partnership of 106 runs off 69 balls provided the backbone to India’s total of 176 for 7 after 20 overs.

South Africa’s challenging chase and India’s bowling response

Chasing 177 for victory, South Africa stumbled early against India’s formidable bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. Despite a valiant effort from Tristan Stubbs (46) and Quinton de Kock (54), who added 58 runs together, South Africa faltered in the final stages. Axar returned to dismiss Stubbs, and the Indian fast bowlers tightened the screws, ultimately restricting South Africa to 169/ 5 in their allotted overs.
