India should strongly oppose the unfortunate disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the 50kg gold medal match at the Paris Olympics because she was found to be overweight, said famous cricketer Sunil Gavaskar in Mumbai on Wednesday. Vinesh was not allowed to compete in the final because she was 100 grams too heavy. Gavaskar said that both the Indian Olympic Association and the Indian government should do everything they can to fix this problem.
“I think it’s very unfortunate and also very unfair. I hope the people in charge will pay attention to it and respond strongly because this is not just a problem in the early rounds,” he told reporters during an event for Spartan racing here.
“We’re discussing the global medal competition, and this issue should not be ignored by anyone in India, whether it’s the Indian Olympic Association or the Indian government.
“We really need to strongly protest about this situation,” said the former captain of the Indian team, noting that whatever happened must have been ‘completely’ devastating for Vinesh.
Vinesh was participating in her third Olympics following disappointing performances in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
She performed really well this time and defeated the defending champion, Yui Susaki, and others on her way to the final. But because she was disqualified, she will come back without any medals from the competition.
