Ferrari’s long-term leadership direction has once again become a major talking point in the Formula 1 paddock, with McLaren team principal Andrea Stella increasingly linked to a sensational return to Maranello. The Italian engineer is being viewed by some insiders as a strong candidate to eventually replace Fred Vasseur, whose position at Ferrari is reportedly under renewed scrutiny despite his current contract.

The French manager extended his agreement with the Italian side until at least the end of the 2027 Formula 1 season, but results and expectations in Maranello continue to place pressure on the Frenchman. In Formula 1, contract security does not always guarantee long-term stability, particularly at a team with Ferrari’s history and performance demands.

At the same time, the wider driver and technical market is already shaping up for the next major reshuffle. The upcoming arrival of Gianpiero Lambiase at McLaren in 2028 has added further intrigue, as it coincides with growing speculation that Andrea Stella himself could be preparing a return to Ferrari in a senior leadership role.

While no official confirmation has been made, paddock rumours suggest that Andrea Stella could already have a pre-agreement in place with Ferrari. If true, such a move would mark a return to the Scuderia for the Italian after more than a decade away, following an extensive career progression that began in Maranello and later evolved into a leading role at McLaren. However, it should also be pointed out that the Italian media has recently denied this information.

Andrea Stella’s Ferrari foundation and McLaren success story

Andrea Stella originally joined Ferrari in 2000 as a performance engineer within the team’s testing structure. His rise through the organisation was closely tied to one of Formula 1’s most dominant eras, working directly with Michael Schumacher between 2002 and 2006 during the peak of Ferrari’s championship-winning run.

He later continued his work within Ferrari’s competitive structure, also contributing to the development environment around Kimi Räikkönen and other key drivers, gaining deep technical and operational experience inside a title-winning organisation.

After leaving Ferrari, Andrea Stella transitioned to McLaren in 2015, where he gradually expanded his responsibilities across multiple technical and operational roles. His influence became particularly important during McLaren’s restructuring phase, helping rebuild a team that had struggled to return to consistent competitiveness after the hybrid era began.

Andrea Stella eventually became McLaren team principal in 2023, a turning point that marked the beginning of a dramatic resurgence for the Woking-based team. Under his leadership, McLaren has returned to the front of the grid, securing back-to-back Constructors’ Championships in 2024 and 2025, while also delivering a Drivers’ Championship victory with Lando Norris in the previous season.

This record of transformation and execution is one of the key reasons Andrea Stella is increasingly viewed as a missing ingredient in Ferrari’s long-term project under Fred Vasseur.

Since Fred Vasseur took over the Ferrari team principal role in 2023, the Scuderia has achieved a limited number of race victories and has not been able to consistently challenge for either the Drivers’ or Constructors’ Championship. In contrast, the Italian manager has built a structured winning environment at McLaren, combining technical clarity, operational discipline, and long-term development strategy. This difference in trajectory has intensified comparisons between the two leadership approaches.

Within Ferrari, expectations remain extremely high, particularly given the presence of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in the driver line-up. The team is expected to deliver immediate results, not long-term rebuilding phases, which increases pressure on Fred Vasseur’s role and decision-making timeline.

Is Fred Vasseur running out of time at Ferrari?

Although Fred Vasseur’s contract runs until the end of the 2027 Formula 1 season, internal and external pressure suggests that performance milestones could ultimately matter more than contractual duration. Some reports indicate that key evaluation points may arrive much earlier, potentially during the current competitive cycle.

At the same time, Ferrari’s 2026 campaign has shown signs of improvement under the new technical regulations. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have delivered consistent podium-level performances in the opening rounds, including multiple P3 finishes that suggest progress with the SF-26 package.

However, while the current car represents a step forward, it is still not at the level of the leading Mercedes package, meaning that further development will be crucial if Ferrari is to re-enter genuine title contention.

Andrea Stella’s proven ability to transform McLaren into a championship-winning operation stands in sharp contrast to Ferrari’s recent struggles to convert potential into sustained success. As a result, speculation around a possible leadership change continues to grow within the Formula 1 paddock.
