Will CSK bounce back in IPL 2026?

The 2025 season of the Indian Premier League has been a grim chapter for the Chennai Super Kings, one of the most decorated franchises in the tournament’s history. With just 2 wins in 10 matches and a negative net run rate of -1.211, CSK have become the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention this season. Let’s look at the Will CSK bounce back in IPL 2026.

This marks the second consecutive year the team has failed to qualify, an uncharacteristic trend for a side renowned for its consistency and resilience.

For a franchise that has won five titles, appeared in ten finals, and qualified for the playoffs 12 times in 16 attempts, this slump feels uncharacteristic. Yet, there is hope for CSK loyalists.

History shows that whenever CSK falters, they bounce back stronger. After missing out in 2020 and 2022, they lifted the trophy in 2021 and 2023. Could 2026 be the next chapter in their redemption arc? Only time will tell, but before that we must look at the possible reasons behind CSK’s struggle in IPL 2025.

Inconsistent top-order

Much of CSK’s downfall this year can be attributed to an underperforming top order. Rachin Ravindra, after a promising start in the season opener, struggled to maintain form and strike rate throughout the tournament.

The team in yellow attempt to stabilize the top with various opening combinations did not yield results, leaving the team without a solid start in most matches. The absence of Ruturaj Gaikwad due to injury further compounded these problems. As one of CSK’s most dependable batters in previous seasons, Gaikwad’s early exit left a void that was never truly filled.

Middle-order muddle

The middle order, traditionally a pillar of strength for CSK, has also been lackluster this season. Experimentation with different players failed to bring stability. While the inclusion of Dewald Brevis, who replaced Gurjapneet Singh, offered a glimmer of hope, and Sam Curran’s explosive 88 off 47 deliveries showcased some fight, these isolated performances were not enough to reverse CSK’s fortunes.

Veterans like Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar, and Deepak Hooda were all handed opportunities, but none managed to make a significant impact. Their inability to deliver under pressure left the team without a reliable core to chase or set competitive targets.

Leaky bowling at crucial moments

Bowling, another area where CSK usually thrives, saw its own share of issues. Matheesha Pathirana, who had been a vital cog in the CSK’s line-up with his unique slingy action and knack for breakthroughs, was notably off his rhythm. Despite picking up 9 wickets in 8 games, his economy rate soared to 10.40, leaking runs during crucial overs and failing to contain opposition momentum. The inconsistency in death bowling meant that even defendable totals slipped away.

The team’s leading run-scorer, Shivam Dube, with 248 runs in 10 matches, ranks only 21st among all batters in IPL 2025, a telling statistic of CSK’s struggles.

No century has come from a CSK bat this season, and strike rates across the board have been underwhelming, hinting at a deeper issue in approach and execution.

The Brighter side

On the brighter side, Noor Ahmad and Syed Khaleel Ahmed emerged as standout bowlers, bagging 15 and 14 wickets respectively. Their efforts, however, were often overshadowed by the lack of support from the rest of the attack and the inability of the batting unit to put enough runs on the board.

Will CSK bounce back in IPL 2026?

History says yes, if there’s one thing the Chennai Super Kings have taught fans over the years, it’s to never count them out, no matter how tough the circumstances. With a legacy of five IPL titles, 10 finals, and 12 playoff appearances, CSK has built a reputation of being the league’s most consistent and resilient team.
