Ravichandran Ashwin has now ended his international career. Having been an artist of some of the breathtaking things in Indian cricket, the legendary off-spinner is also known for setting many records and in many cases portraying significant roles in leading the ascension of the Indian team as the world’s best team.
The decision has come at an unexpected juncture when the Indian team is in a tight contest with Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ashwin played one of the three Tests of the five-match series and then announced his retirement on Wednesday after the contest at Brisbane ended in a draw.
He accompanied Rohit in the post-match media conference and did not take any questions while confirming the news.
“This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” Ashwin said on Wednesday. “I do feel there’s a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer, but I would like to expose and probably showcase that in club-level cricket, but this will be the last day. I’ve had a lot of fun. I must say I’ve created a lot of memories alongside Rohit and several of my other teammates. Even though I’ve lost some of them over the last few years, we are the last bunch of OGs if we can say that, left out of the dressing room. I would be marking this as my date of having played at this level.
Thanks to all who rendered themselves valuable, but I must thank the BCCI and team-mates, many of them. I would like to name a few of them. All the coaches who have been part of this journey, most importantly Rohit, Virat (Kohli), Ajinkya (Rahane), (Cheteshwar) Pujara, who have taken those splendid catches around the back to give me the number of wickets I have managed to get over the years. Bringing in also really big gratitude to Australia, who have been really fierce competitors.
“There are no questions, but it’s a highly emotional moment, I really don’t think I am in a condition to answer them, so please pardon me for that one and again yeah that’s my bit thanks for being the journalist writing nice things and also at times writing nasty things. That is a big relationship I think we would maintain forever and I hope the cricketers come into the future also would get the same amount of love that you have given them once again thank you all and yeah see you all soon as a cricketer I have just stopped it and I might go on to be involved with the game because this is a game that’s given me everything Thank you,” he concluded.
