What is a Table top Runway???? Why it is so dangerous to take off and landing????…..
Admit it, sometimes our memorable trip may present some unforgettable accidents. Many lost their relatives, friends and beloved person because of accidents during journey. It may be a car accident, bus accident, train accident or even a flight crash, the value of each life is most valuable one. We may heard few terms during a plane crash like Black box, propeller failure, tail failure etc., But some terms are too weird for us when we hearing that as first in our life. Like plane crash at table top runway either while take off or landing.Â
So what is a Table Top Runway??? How it Looks??? Why flights often gets crashed on those runway??? Lets know more about this…..
Table Top Runway:
Runways located at plateau regions, exactly on the top with either stopping and without warning can have chances of deep diving into some trenches or water bodies like river, lake, sometimes sea. It will looks like a tail structure from a bird’s eye view. Literally it wont give any option except to run exactly on the runway roads. Since both sides have some disturbance like mountains, trenches and rivers. Precision matters for a pilot while landing and take off.
These kind of Table top runways are found in hills, plateaus and islands. Even the Agatti Island Airport of Lakshadweep also having Table top runway, there both sides were covered with sea. These runways became too dangerous during rainy season. Rain water at runway reduces friction between plane tyres and road leds to slippery. So its pilot responsibility to land it with cautious at prescribed speed after receiving signals.
Normally a runway is about nearly 1.8 kms. Sometimes it may extend upto 2.4 kms for bigger aircrafts. The length of runway give enough time for a plane to increase its speed so that the it can able to take off without any issues. The sameway those runway provides enough distance and time during landing. A Table top Runway is not so longer as like the normal runways. It will be less than 1.8 kms, in specific nearly about 1.6 kms. Each and every inch matters right. If a plane didnt get much speed to take off within the runway distance. Obviously there is a chance of crashing.Â
Lot of flights got crashed because of these runways. In 2016 a flight met an accident while take off from Mangalore Airport. Almost 158 people died at the start of their journey. Recently Air India plane crashes during landing at Karipur runway, Kozhikode. Sources said accident happened because of heavy rain in that region. Its in the hands of pilot and airport service department to be cautious in those kind of runways.
