What is Six Nations Super Saturday?

We explain what makes the final weekend of the Six Nations championship Super.

Six Nations Super Saturday is the name traditionally given to the last round of the famous championship, when all of the competing teams play on the same day.

For anyone watching the 2026 Six Nations, it’s set to be a vintage afternoon/evening on which this year’s title will be decided – and all three games have something at stake.

When is Super Saturday 2026?

The last round of this year’s Six Nations takes place on Saturday 14 March 2026.

In the second of Saturday’s Six Nations fixtures (4.4opm GMT), Wales host Italy knowing that victory will end a 15-match losing streak in the competition. The Azzurri, meanwhile, have a very real chance of finishing the championship with three wins for the very first time.

But there’ll arguably be more attention on the other two matches, which could both determine the destination of the title.

In the first Super Saturday game (2.10pm GMT), Scotland travel to Dublin for a Triple Crown decider against Ireland. Both sides are also still in with a shout of winning the Six Nations trophy.

For that reason, Ireland and Scotland will be keeping an eye on the final game of Super Saturday (8.10pm) GMT, as France play England in Paris – the championship is in France’s hands, so they know that a bonus point win will be enough to retain the title.

Has the Six Nations title ever been decided on Super Saturday?

In 2003, both Ireland and England were in the hunt for a Grand Slam as it came down to a decider in Dublin. In the end England would take the title – however, back in 2003, not all matches were played on the same day, with England winning on the Sunday.

The first Six Nations Super Saturday took place the following year, on 27 March 2004. France just edged England 24-21 in their last fixture that year, to take the championship title and a Grand Slam.

In 2005, Wales won a Grand Slam and their first title in 11 years. With France breathing down their neck, the Welsh beat Ireland 32-20 to finish top.

In 2006 France won on points difference after a final-round win over Wales, and they did so again in 2007 – though that time edging out Ireland – following a last-round thumping of Scotland by the French.

In 2011, England were denied a Grand Slam by the Irish in the final round. In 2013, Wales’ famous 30-3 win over England in the last round meant that the Welsh won the title (ahead of England) on points difference.

The next year, a two-point win for Ireland over France on Super Saturday sealed the deal.

In 2015, we had a crazy finish – there were 27 tries on the final day as England, Ireland and Wales could have all won the title. In the end, England had to beat France by 26 points to take the title. However, it finished 55-35, and so Ireland lifted the trophy after their win in Scotland.

In 2026, England, France and Ireland could all have won heading into Super Saturday – though Les Bleus had the advantage of knowing victory would effectively guarantee the title, thanks to their vastly superior points difference.
