Although plenty of players around the country are already declaring their intention to enter the transfer portal this spring, the portal has yet to officially open.
Due to NCAA rule changes, the portal won’t open until the Tuesday after the national championship game, which falls on April 7.
As was the case last spring, it’s expected to be a busy portal season for IU basketball, as Darian DeVries, the new executive director of basketball, Ryan Carr, and the coaching staff will work long hours to build a roster for the 2026-27 season.
The portal opens later this year than it did a year ago and the window to enter has also been shortened.
In 2024, the window to enter the transfer portal began on Monday, March 18 and closed on Wednesday, May 1. Last spring, in 2025, the portal opened on Monday, March 24 and closed on Tuesday, April 22.
This spring, the portal will open on Tuesday, April 7 and close on Tuesday, April 21. The new 15-day window was enacted following a recommendation by the men’s basketball oversight committee.
It’s important to note that the deadline is only for entering the portal and doesn’t require student-athletes to choose a new school by April 21.
A recruiting dead period from April 2-9 means that campus visits for players who enter the transfer portal won’t begin until Friday, April 10.
Visits, on- and off-campus, will be permitted through Thursday, April 30, before a quiet period for recruiting begins on May 1 through May 9. During a quiet period, no in-person recruiting contacts are permitted off-campus.
On Sunday, May 10, there will be a one-day dead period for recruiting before a quiet period from May 11-14, an evaluation period for high school recruiting events on May 15-17, a two-day quiet period from May 18-19 and then a dead period to end the month from May 20-31. That means that most transfer portal recruiting should be wrapped up by mid-May.
The NCAA does not provide public access to the transfer portal, but numerous resources are available to track names as they enter.
Verbal Commits is the most frequently updated resource, which features a constantly updated feed of portal entries. Verbal Commits also tracks portal entries on its X (formerly Twitter) account.
247Sports also has a transfer portal tracker updated in real time.
