Two recent men’s champions were dispatched Monday, but the women’s defending champion and highest remaining men’s seed both advanced.
On the woman’s side of the draw, a trio of Americans have joined in the final eight by including: Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Hailey Baptiste. And Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion, continued her dominance yesterday, winning her ninth straight Miami match — now taking 17 consecutive sets here.
On the men’s side, Florida-based Frances Tiafoe saved a couple match points in his third-set tiebreak win over defending champ Jakub Mensik, while Francisco Cerundolo downed 2023 winner Daniil Medvedev. Second seed Jannik Sinner, the 2024 champion, had no such trouble as he was victorious Monday night.
It’s down to the final eight for the WTA, and the first two quarterfinals will take place Tuesday. The afternoon contest will see Victoria Mboko taking on Karolina Muchova. They met just last month in the Doha final, which Muchova won.
In the nightcap, No. 4 Coco Gauff will attempt to reach her first Miami semifinal when she plays Belinda Bencic, against whom she has a 4-2 record. The entire men’s Round of 16 will be played Tuesday, with five Americans – Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Sebastian Korda and Alex Michelsen – among those aiming for the quarterfinals.
The Miami Open presented by Itaú will also be hosting an adaptive tennis clinic Tuesday at 1 p.m. on Courts 17-18 in collaboration with Love Serving Autism, welcoming young athletes on the spectrum to participate in an inclusive on-court session at Hard Rock Stadium. The clinic will bring together youth athletes, coaches and their families to experience tennis in a fun and safe environment.
