Ballon d’Or: The 68th edition of the Ballond’ Or will take place tonight to crown the best female and men players of the 2023-2024 season of Football. France’s football governing body, France Football awards this iconic award on a yearly basis, recognising the individual brilliance of football players on the turf over a period of one year.
Ever since the award was introduced 68 years ago in 1956, it has turned out to become one of the most precious and desired awards in the history of Football. England’s legendary footballer and icon Sir Stanley Matthews was the first ever Ballond’ Or winner.
Real Madrid’s left winger and Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior is regarded as the favourite to win the Men’s Ballon D’or while Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona Femini is the favourite to win the women’s Ballon d’Or for a second-successive time.
The Ballon d’Or 2024 award-ceremony also marks the beginning of a new-era in Football with the legendary duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi not getting nominated in the 30-man shortlist for this year. It ends their dominance of multiple decades which saw the two lift the award 13 times in the last sixteen years since 2008.
Alongside the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or awards, the 68th edition will also feature multiple different awards. The best goalkeeper of the 2023-2024 season will be awarded the Yashin Trophy while the best under 21 player will be given the Kopa Trophy.
Coaches will also be awarded the best Men’s and Women’s coach of the year awards while prizes will be handed out to the best Men’s and Women’s Football-Clubs. The player who scored the highest number of goals in the 2023-2024 season will be awarded the Gerd Muller Trophy.
The Ballon d’Or Trophy is awarded on the basis of three-main criterias:
The first criteria involves individual brilliance alongside impressive and decisive character. The second criteria for awarding the trophy involves the overall performance of the player’s team in a particular season.
Additionally, the nominees’ fair play and class are evaluated as well. To determine the true winner of the prize, a global panel of specialised journalists, one from each nation, submitted their votes.
