The IPL Auction for Season 18 is set to take place in November 2024, with the third or fourth weekend being the likely date. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has notified franchises of this tentative schedule. Like last year, the auction is expected to be held overseas, with potential host cities including Doha, Abu Dhabi, and even Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia’s growing investment in sports, including cricket, makes it a strong contender. However, the BCCI has not yet confirmed the final venue.

Franchises are eagerly awaiting the announcement of retention rules, expected by the end of this month. Concerns have been raised over the timing, as teams may not have enough preparation time if there are delays. Teams will likely have until mid-November to announce their retentions, providing around two months to plan for the auction.

The BCCI succeeded in hosting the auction overseas for the first time in 2023, with Dubai as the venue. This move has opened the door for future auctions in international locations. Previous venues considered included London and Istanbul.

In addition to auction logistics, several former India coaches are expected to join IPL franchises. Vikram Rathour, India’s former batting coach, is in talks with Rajasthan Royals, possibly replacing Trevor Penney, who is expected to move to the Royals’ CPL team, Barbados Royals. Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey is also in discussions with IPL teams, while 2011 World Cup winner Munaf Patel is expected to take on a coaching role for IPL 2024.

IPL Auction for Season 18 shapes the squads giving clarity on rules and smooth execution are key priorities for both the BCCI and the franchises.
