The final day of the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics features an exciting Gold Medal matchup in the Men’s Ice Hockey tournament that was a year in the making as the United States faces off with Canada on Sunday, Feb. 22 at Milano Santagiulia IHO Arena in Milan, almost a year to the date of their 4 Nations Face-Off Final.

Around this time last year, the United States and Canada were co-hosting a nine day national tournament in place of the NHL All-Star Game that featured the neighboring countries brawling with each other at the drop of the puck in their first meeting, and ended with Canada winning the Final in Boston, 3-2 in overtime.

Add in the facts that the women’s teams for these nations just played a Gold Medal Game against each other on Thursday which the USA won, 2-1 in overtime, and Canada has not accumulated as many medals, and particularly Gold Medals, as was expected for these games, and there is sure to be tons of passion and intensity in this contest.

In the Olympics, neither team has lost yet, and outside of the Quarterfinals, when both went to overtime, and Canada’s comeback in the Semifinals, they haven’t been threatened. And if you count the women’s teams the only two losses either side has had so far came in games against each other, where the USA is 2-0 so far.

Canada’s Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Devon Toews, Cale Makar, Thomas Harley and Macklin Celebrini had the most ice time in the Semifinal. While the USA only had Quinn Hughes on the ice for 20 minutes or more, with Auston Matthews and Brock Faber getting the closest to the mark, while Charlie McAvoy, Jack Eichel, Matthew Tkachuk, Jaccob Slavin, Vincent Trocheck, Jake Sanderson and Matt Boldy all had at least 15 minutes on the ice.

The big question heading into the contest is whether or not Sidney Crosby will be able to go for Canada, and if he can play after leaving in the second period of the Quarterfinal and missing the Semifinal, how much will he be able to contribute. The USA is seeking its third Gold in Men’s Ice Hockey, and the first since the 1980 Miracle on Ice. The nation has already secured it first medal in the event since 2010, when it lost to Canada in the Gold Medal Game, meaning the USA will have 12 medals all-time in Men’s Ice Hockey no matter the result. Canada is looking to capture its first Gold since 2014 and first medal in general since 2018. Canada will leave Milan with 17 medals all-time in Men’s Ice Hockey, the only thing left to determine is if it will be the 10th Gold or fifth Silver.
