With the Caribbean Premier League only a few days away from its 12th season, scheduled to kick off on August 30, 2024, cricket fans are ready to experience this enriching T20 journey. While through the years, a few teams have made a statement in this league, it is the Trinbago Knight Riders that have emerged as the most successful CPL franchise. In 11 years, they have bagged most CPL trophies in their bag. Let’s take a look at their triumphant journey over the years.
Trinbago Knight Riders Have Most CPL Trophies
The Trinbago Knight Riders have been by far the biggest powerhouse in terms of CPL, with a quite astounding four titles. Their first came in 2015 when they were known as the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel. On that year, they emerged champions by 20 runs over the Barbados Tridents in an exciting final match held in Port of Spain.
The team, rebranded as Trinbago Knight Riders, went on to win back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. In the 2017 final, they sneaked past the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots by three wickets in a nail-biting finish at Tarouba. On the following year, they whitewashed Guyana Amazon Warriors by eight wickets to seal a third title, again in Tarouba.
The Knight Riders’ fourth, and most recent, title came in 2020 when they completed an unbeaten campaign with victory over the St Lucia Zouks – now rebranded as the Saint Lucia Kings – by eight wickets in the final at Tarouba. This confirmed their status as the most successful CPL franchise.
Other CPL Champions
The next team to feature after the Trinbago Knight Riders is the Jamaica Tallawahs, who have won three titles. The Tallawahs emerged winners in the inaugural CPL in 2013, where they defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors by seven wickets in Port of Spain. The second title was won against Guyana Amazon Warriors in 2016 again, this time with a nine-wicket win in Basseterre. The last time was in 2022, when the Tallawahs won by eight wickets in Guyana over the Barbados Royals.
The Barbados Royals—formerly known as the Barbados Tridents—have won the CPL twice: first in 2014 when it edged the Guyana Amazon Warriors by eight runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method in Basseterre, and in 2019 when it added a second title by outdoing the Amazon Warriors by 27 runs in Tarouba.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors finally broke their streak of finishing as runners-up by capturing their maiden CPL title in 2023, going on to defeat the Trinbago Knight Riders by nine wickets in Guyana in an utterly clinical performance. They may have appeared for six finals but have only one title to their credit, hence becoming a team with the most runner-up finishes in CPL history.
The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots have won only one CPL title, and that came in 2021. The team won an absolute nail-biter against the Saint Lucia Kings by three wickets in Basseterre. Notwithstanding several ups and downs, the Patriots have made it big on the biggest stage.
The final one, the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel, who underwent a rebranding into the Trinbago Knight Riders, only managed to win a single CPL title back in the year 2015, as aforementioned, before their rebranding into See Them Go into further successes.
Obviously, with CPL 2024, all eyes will be on these teams fighting for the pinnacle title. Will the Trinbago Knight Riders be able to continue their winning ways, or will some other team rise and snatch it? Action starts from August 30, and this season, cricket enthusiasts are in store for an action-packed season.
