Who is Jeffrey Vandersay? The Sri Lankan spinner who tore apart India’s batting order in 2nd ODI

After restricting Sri Lanka to 240/9 in 50 overs, many would have predicted India to go on and win the match by achieving the target of 241. However, things went completely the opposite way thanks to Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay who bowled a magnificent spell of 6/33 in 10 overs to carry the hosts to a 32-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

It wasn’t like Vandersay only took the wickets of tail-enders in his 6-wicket haul in fact, all the wickets he took were that of dangerous Indian batters. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul were the wickets that the Sri Lankan spinner picked and that is enough to speak about his quality.  But now the question arises, who actually is Jeffrey Vandersay and what makes him so special?

Many may believe that Vandersay is a player who recently made his senior debut but that isn’t true at all. The Sri Lankan made his ODI debut back in 2015 during a T20I series against Pakistan. He also put in decent performances during the 2016 T20 World Cup. However, he wasn’t able to continue the decent displays in the international circuit and thus went down the pecking order. After that, he had no choice but to patiently wait for his turn.
