The highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), a prestigious cricket tournament between India and Australia, is scheduled to take place from November 22, 2024, to January 7, 2025. We look at Who Will be India captain if Rohit Sharma misses BGT?
In preparation for this iconic series, the Indian cricket team has announced a strong squad, with Rohit Sharma appointed as the captain and Jasprit Bumrah serving as his deputy.
However, recent reports say that Rohit Sharma might miss the first match of the series because he and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, are expecting their second child.
This development has sparked discussions among fans regarding who should step in as captain for India if Rohit cannot lead the team during the opening clash of the BGT. The situation raises important questions about leadership and strategy as the team looks to make a strong start in this crucial series.
Gavaskar Backs Bumrah as Captain, But Kohli’s Experience Looms Large
On this, Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary cricketer, was told that if Rohit Sharma is unavailable for the first two Tests of the Australia series, the selection committee should appoint Jasprit Bumrah as the captain for the entire tour. Gavaskar emphasized the importance of the captain being present for the first Test unless injured and proposed that Rohit should play as a regular player if he is not fit to lead.
“It is important for the captain to play the first Test match. It’s different if he is injured, but if he is not available, then the deputy leader will be under a lot of pressure.” Gavaskar said
“I have been reading that Rohit Sharma might not play the first two Tests of the Australia series. I feel that, in that case the selection committee should appoint Jasprit Bumrah the captain of the side for the entire Australia tour, and tell Rohit Sharma that you will participate as a player in this series,” He added, Quoted by India Today.

If this occurs, there is a possibility that Jasprit Bumrah could lead Team India. However, following the successful Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series last season, Virat Kohli may also captain the team in the first match of the BGT 2024-25, as he has more captaincy experience than Bumrah.
