India opening batsman for England Test series 2025
With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bidding farewell to Test cricket, the Indian Test team is undergoing a generational transition. A significant question looming ahead of the five-Test series in England is: Who will be India opening batsman for England Test series 2025?
Three names dominate the conversation, KL Rahul, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and B Sai Sudharsan, each offering contrasting strengths and trajectories.
KL Rahul
KL Rahul remains the frontrunner for the role, thanks to his experience and past performances in England. Having opened in eight of his nine Tests there, Rahul has accumulated 597 runs at an average of 37.31, including two centuries.
His 2021 innings at Lord’s remains one of the finest by an Indian opener in recent memory. After a strong showing in Australia where he impressed in both middle and top-order roles, Rahul offers stability and familiarity in foreign conditions something that India may highly value on a tough English tour.
Abhimanyu Easwaran
At 29, Easwaran has long been knocking on the doors of Test cricket. With over 100 first-class matches and a robust domestic record for Bengal, he brings both temperament and technique suited to red-ball cricket. He has been a consistent part of India’s A and reserve squads, including the 2021 England tour. Now captaining India A for the warm-up games, this could finally be his moment.
Sai Sudharsan
Sudharsan’s rapid rise has caught the selectors’ eyes. A left-hander like Jaiswal, he averaged 42.33 in first-class cricket as an opener and made his mark in county cricket for Surrey. Although more experienced in limited-overs formats, his growing maturity and adaptability make him a wildcard option.
Sai is in good form right now, as he is the leading run-scorer in the ongoing IPL. Although T20 is a completely different format than test cricket, but his skill and ability to change gears and find holes distinguishes him as an all-format player.
India’s five-match test series against England will start on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds.
