The Indian Premier League 2025, already a tournament of highs and drama, faced an unexpected pause with major implications looming for several top international stars. So let’s look at the IPL 2025 overseas player availability.

As the BCCI eyes a potential resumption of the league, there is rising uncertainty over the availability of key players from Australia and South Africa, especially with the ICC World Test Championship final scheduled to begin on June 11 at Lord’s. This timing clash has raised fresh doubts over player availability, particularly for franchises still in playoff contention.

Performances, Injuries & International Priorities

Among the standout performers in the bowling department this season, Josh Hazlewood, with 18 wickets in 10 matches, has maintained a strong average of 17.28 and a sharp strike rate of 12.28. However, his continued participation in the league is under a cloud due to a shoulder niggle that ruled him out of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s recent matches. Even prior to the tournament’s suspension, he was a doubtful starter.

The broader challenge, however, lies in balancing IPL commitments with international responsibilities. Hazlewood, having recently returned from a calf and side strain, is now part of Australia’s plans for the WTC final and is expected to attend a UK conditioning camp in early June.

His compatriots – Pat Cummins, and Travis Head – are also weighing their options, especially with the WTC final fast approaching and their team SRH are already out of contention. While Delhi Capitals for which Starc has been playing for this season, are still in the playoffs race, and Starc’s contribution is extremely important for the team.

For franchises like Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the absence of such pivotal players could significantly impact their playoff ambitions should the IPL resume.

For the South African players’ NOCs were granted until May 25, and the board of South African players will make the final decision about their return. If the competition resumes and is postponed by one week, the Proteas’ participation in the IPL will be in question because they have a test scheduled for the first week of June against Zimbabwe as part of their WTC final preparations.
