In their search for a replacement, Chennai Super Kings have focused on Ayush Mhatre. The franchise, struggling to find a solid combination for this IPL season, has decided to bring in a promising opener from Mumbai as a replacement.
As per the report by Cricbuzz, Ayush Mhatre was called to Chennai for trials along with a other few batters. Though Prithvi Shaw was also considered, but the team chose Mhatre to replace Gaikwad.
The decision was made on April 13 regarding a new player and Ayush Mhatre has been asked to join the team immediately, but he will connect with the MS Dhoni-led squad in a few days.
Who is Ayush Mhatre?
The 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre is well known in Mumbai Cricket. He played a total of 9 first-class games, where he scored 504 runs, which included 2 centuries and a half-century. When it comes to List A matches, he has played 7 matches and scored 458 runs with two centuries and a half-century and boosts a batting average of 65.42. His best score in List A Cricket was 181 runs against Nagaland.
He made his first-class cricket debut in October 2024 and experts believe he has the potential to play for India. Despite this impressive performance, Ayush Mhatre was unsold in the auction with a base price of Rs 30 lakh.
