The Indian cricket team currently does not have a permanent head coach. Rahul Dravid’s time as coach finished after the T20 World Cup 2024. A less experienced Indian team is now in Zimbabwe for a series of five T20 matches, and VVS Laxman, who leads the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is stepping in as the temporary head coach. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already talked to two people about the job – Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman – and it looks like Gautam Gambhir will be chosen for the role.
However, the announcement has been postponed because BCCI secretary Jay Shah has already said that the new coach will start working from the Sri Lanka series. A report in the Indian Express says that the delay in making the announcement official is because Gambhir and the board are still discussing his salary.
Next to Dravid, the jobs of his team, which includes batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip, have also finished. Once Gambhir’s new job is confirmed, the board will need to begin finding other coaches.
It’s also said that the board wants to let Gambhir make all the decisions about the support staff. They might not even get a batting coach since Gambhir was a very good opening batter when he was playing.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah previously mentioned: “We will soon appoint both a coach and a selector. The CAC has interviewed candidates and chosen two for consideration. Once they decide in Mumbai, we will follow their choice. VVS Laxman will travel to Zimbabwe, but the new coach will start with the Sri Lanka series.”
The Indian team plans to visit Sri Lanka for three T20 matches and three ODIs beginning on July 27.
