On Day 3 of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final at Lord’s, players from both South Africa and Australia wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the victims of the devastating Ahmedabad plane crash. A minute’s silence was also observed before play began on Saturday, June 14.
The same tribute was earlier paid by Team India and India A during their intra-squad warm-up match in Beckenham. Players from both sides wore black armbands and paused for a moment of silence to mourn the loss of lives in the tragic crash.
The plane, bound for London, crashed just 40 seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12. A total of 241 people lost their lives in the horrific incident, with only one known survivor. The passengers included people of various nationalities, and the crash has left people around the world in shock.
While the mood at Lord’s was sombre off the field, the contest on the field remained intense. Australia started Day 3 with a lead of 218 runs and just two wickets in hand. The match has seen both teams take control at various moments and is likely to end on the third day itself.
South Africa will now look to bundle out Australia quickly and put together a solid chase. The target is expected to be over 200 — something only achieved four times before in a fourth innings at Lord’s.
The black armbands served as a silent reminder that some moments are bigger than sport, as the cricket world united in tribute to those affected by the Ahmedabad tragedy.
