Wight Gets Off To A Fast Start In Florida

WEEDSPORT, N.Y. — While a Big Gator trophy at Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals wasn’t in the cards for Larry Wight, he still left Florida making headlines.

The Phoenix, N.Y., driver won the finale at Volusia Speedway Park, earning his first Super DIRTcar Series triumph since 2022. That victory came one week after he won three consecutive races at All-Tech Raceway during Dirt Track Digest’s Showdown in the Sunshine State.

Despite how well his No. 99L ran over the seven-race stretch, Wight said he didn’t expect to start the season as strongly as he did.

“It definitely feels like it’s been a while,” Wight said. “We’ve been close a couple of times, and finally just had to get back to our old notes and our old package. We went back to square one on the car, didn’t touch it all night, and sometimes you just got to do that, and hopefully the cards fall your way.”

While his strong runs may have surprised some, he’s started to get closer to victory lane toward the end of 2025. Wight was in contention for a win for much of the R.D. Hutchinson Memorial at Can-Am Speedway and turned heads in the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 during Super DIRT Week 53 at Oswego Speedway, when he went from last to second in 100 laps before ultimately finishing fourth.

Those races, along with his Florida success, he attributed to going back to an old Bicknell Chassis.

“We got the cars at the end of last year that fit our package,” Wight said. “The ones from 2021-2022. And the biggest key is not making many changes to them throughout the night.”

With momentum on his side after Florida, Wight aims to continue his success in Super DIRTcar Series events, starting with the Delaware Diamond at Georgetown Speedway on Saturday, March 28.

And how he said he’ll do that is simple.

“We just have to stick to our notes,” Wight said. “On an off night, you just have to chalk things up as a bad night and keep things going with what you know.”
