Will Konnor Griffin play his way onto Pirates’ Opening Day roster?

The Pittsburgh Pirates are entering 2026 with a new sense of hope. Not only does the team have a brand-new look, but a young corps of highly-anticipated prospects is emerging, ready to make a serious impact.

One such prospect is fireballer Bubba Chandler, who made the jump last year for a brief stint. Chandler looks to shake last year’s inconsistencies and hold a rotation spot behind ace Paul Skenes. But as much optimism surrounds Chandler, he has been largely overshadowed by baseball’s top prospect, shortstop/outfielder Konnor Griffin.

At age 19, Griffin is already showcasing a capacity to play at the big-league level. This spring, he is 3-for-14, with all three hits leaving the yard, giving a sense of how his plus-rated power might play in the majors. In addition, his ability to make contact is also shining through. Though he hasn’t had much to show for it in terms of batting average (.214), Griffin has only struck out twice.

Konnor Griffin could join rare company this year

It may be a small sample size, but Griffin’s power-heavy spring performance has led to speculation that he might break camp with the Pirates as a rare teen phenom — he turns 20 in April — following in the footsteps of greats such as Adrian Beltre, Mickey Mantle and Ken Griffey Jr., each of whom started on an Opening Day roster prior to turning 20. Should he crack the Opening Day roster this season, Griffin would be the 21st MLB player to do so as a teen.

As his early spring numbers suggest, it would appear Griffin would fit in well on a major league roster. Last year’s minor league results only serve to echo that sentiment.

In 484 at-bats, Griffin hit .333/.415/.527 with 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases, rocketing from Low-A to Double-A in a year. However, though last season was a stellar one for Griffin, it was his only year of professional baseball. In addition, he is yet to play a game at the Triple-A level. This casts a shadow of doubt as to where he’ll end up on Opening Day (March 26).

Ball clubs tend to prioritize player development, opting not to rush prospects onto the field. For a talented, potentially generational player like Griffin, full development is all the more essential. But whether or not Griffin graces the field on Opening Day, Pirates fans can look forward to watching him launch balls into the Allegheny sometime this season.
