Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald has revealed that internal discussions are underway about the possibility of Steve Smith opening the batting alongside Usman Khawaja during the upcoming Test summer. These talks are particularly relevant with the five-match series against India set to begin in November.
McDonald Hints at a Shift
Despite the speculation, McDonald indicated that no decisions have been made just yet, though the idea is being considered. The debate was sparked after veteran journalist Robert Craddock suggested that Travis Head may be a better option to open the batting, with Smith returning to the middle order.
“That’s the question on everyone’s lips… but we haven’t made any firm decisions around that one,” McDonald said while speaking to SEN’s Whateley. He confirmed that while the conversation is ongoing, there’s still some time before the final lineup is determined.
Smith’s Role in the Lineup
Smith opened the batting in Australia’s last four Test matches, averaging 28.50. Although his role in the team is not in jeopardy, there is uncertainty about whether he will remain at the top of the order. McDonald said that any changes made to Smith’s position would influence the rest of the lineup.
“We’ve seen Cameron Green be really successful at number four as well, so that adds layers to the decision-making,” McDonald stated, indicating that other players’ form will also play a role in the final decision.
Consultation with NSW Ahead of Sheffield Shield
McDonald also said that if a decision is made to keep Smith as an opener, the New South Wales coach Greg Shipperd will be informed to help Smith prepare for his role in the Sheffield Shield.
“We’ll let Greg Shipperd know what our plans are and then we’ll see what he does with his New South Wales side should Steve Smith play Shield cricket,” McDonald added.
Captain Pat Cummins’ Input
Captain Pat Cummins, who is currently rehabbing from injury, will also have a significant say in the final makeup of the playing XI. McDonald emphasized that the leadership group will work together to ensure Australia fields its best side for the first Test, set to take place in Perth on November 22.
Looking Ahead
Although nothing is set in stone, McDonald expressed his belief in maintaining the core top six batters from Australia’s recent series in New Zealand, which includes Smith, Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Green, Head, and Mitch Marsh.
“Should they get a clean run at it and be well prepared, then they would be the best-placed players to fill that,” McDonald concluded.
As Australia prepares for the highly anticipated series against India, all eyes will be on how the batting lineup is finalized and whether Smith will continue in his role as an opener.
