Sunil Gavaskar believes Virat Kohli can match Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international hundreds if he stays in form for the next three years. He feels the target is tough but well within reach for a player as driven and fit as Kohli.
Gavaskar said Kohli’s current scoring rate gives him a real chance. He reminded fans that Kohli just hit two hundreds in the recent ODI series and is looking in strong rhythm. He added that more big scores against teams like New Zealand could push Kohli’s tally into the high eighties very soon.
In the Visakhapatnam ODI, India chased 271 with ease. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave a strong start that allowed Kohli to walk in without pressure. He made a quick 65 from 45 balls and looked in total control from the moment he arrived.
Gavaskar praised the way Kohli attacked without losing shape. He said the knock felt like a T20 version of Kohli inside an ODI. He explained that Kohli began playing shots from the second ball but none of them were wild or risky.
He said Kohli enjoyed the time in the middle because the openers had already set up the game. He also pointed out that Kohli did not give the bowlers even a hint of an edge during his stay. This mix of aggression and discipline stood out for the former India captain.
Kohli’s Dominant ODI Series
Kohli finished the three-match series with 302 runs at an average of 151 and a strike rate of 117. He hit two hundreds and one quick half-century. His approach looked more attacking early in the innings but he still kept rotating singles with ease.
Gavaskar summed up his view by saying, “Why not? Even if he plays for three more years, he needs 16 hundreds from here.”
He added that the way Kohli has been batting makes the 100-century mark “very achievable.”
