William Nylander has thoughts on why Maple Leafs’ season has gone poorly, but won’t elaborate

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ season has gone from bad to worse, and as it stands right now, the Leafs are all but eliminated from playoff contention and face the reality of giving the Boston Bruins their first-round pick, unless it ends up in the top-5 of the draft order.

William Nylander, who has arguably been the only member of this team who has delivered in big moments, was asked following practice on Monday where he believed things went wrong for the Maple Leafs this season. As always, Nylander is a man of few words, but in this instance, his lack of an answer spoke volumes.

Nylander on where it has gone wrong for the #Leafs this season: “I have my thoughts about maybe some stuff, but that’s something I’m going to keep to myself.”

While it’s beyond anybody here to speculate on Nylander’s beliefs, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to put two and two together and realize that it reads as a possible shot at coaching or management. The disconnect between the Maple Leafs and head coach Craig Berube has emerged in a big way in recent weeks, with the two sides often offering different reasons for why the team has struggled so much.
Easton Cowan spoke about how the team was deflated after a response from the Ottawa Senators in their 5-2 loss to their provincial rivals over the weekend, to which Berube disagreed with following the game.

“I don’t know why they’d be deflated after we gave up a power-play goal,” Berube said post-game. “We broke a stick, and we are trying to get a stick. They scored a goal, but big deal. We played a good first period. I don’t understand the thought process of not following up and not being ready to go in the second, knowing they’re going to push. We didn’t respond well enough. I don’t understand this “deflated” stuff, to be honest with you. It is a cop out.”

Whether Nylander’s comments had anything to do with coaching or not will remain a mystery for the time being, but it’s obvious that the Leafs’ upper management understands how dire the situation is. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley has reportedly already started conducting 1-on-1s with various members of the organization as they look to navigate through foreign territory, not having missed the playoffs since 2015-16 before this season.
