Once a dominant presence on track, blasting nine Constructors’ Championships and seven Drivers’ titles, the team, who arguable has the strongest driver lineup of the year, carries a legacy few teams can match. Now, after years at the back of the pack, they are on the hunt for former glory.

This upwards trajectory has been underpinned by continued investments in infrastructure, personnel and a long term technical development. The team, now operating under James Vowels, is beginning to reap the rewards of its resets both on and off track.

Now, as Formula 1 introduces monumental regulation changes for 2026, Williams sets its sights on taking the next step forward. With renewed confidence, an experience driver lineup and a growing fanbase, the team enters the new era aiming to be consistently in the top ten.

Carlos Sainz

Now one of the most experienced drivers on the Formula 1 grid, Sainz arrived at Williams as a proven race winner, and delivered for the team in 2025. Across more than a decade in Formula 1, the Spaniard has built a reputation for intelligence, adaptability and consistency, combining outright pace with one of the sharpest racing minds on the grid.

During the 2025 season, Sainz played a central role in the team’s resurgence, securing two podium finishes, at the Azerbaijan and Qatar Grand Prix respectively. These results confirmed Williams’ status as the best of the rest and underlined the effectiveness of the team’s long term rebuild. Having previously competed for Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren and Ferrari, Sainz brought a rare breadth of experience to the team at the back of the field.

Beyond the track, Sainz’s impact to Williams has been mammoth. Backed by one of the most passionate and engaged fanbases, his presence significantly boosted Williams’ global visibility in 2025. His announcement to the team contributed to increased commercial interest and new sponsorships, boosting the team’s momentum as they continued to rebuild.

As new regulations take hold, Williams will look to Sainz not only as a benchmark behind the wheel, but as a central figure in the teams’ progression. With his experience, knowledge and leadership, he will be crucial in converting results in Williams’ 2026 campaign.

Alexander Albon

Entering his fifth season with the British team, Alexander Albon is looking to reap the rewards of his dedication. One of the friendliest faces on the grid, Albon joined Williams with a wealth of knowledge from his time at Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso. Over his career he has secured multiple podium finishes, including a memorable second place at the 2020 Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Thai British driver has consistently demonstrated his ability to extract performance. With his raw pace, composure under pressure and technical understanding making him a key asset for Williams as they head into their 2026 campaign. With over 120 races under his belt, Albon has helped the Grove outfit achieve multiple points finishes. Despite the contributions, a first podium with Williams has elided him, making it a key target for the 2026 season.

Off track, Albon’s international fanbase, particularly strong across Southeast Asia, has boosted Williams’ visibility. His professionalism and approachable personality have made him a figure of stability within the team as it rebuilds its competitive stature.

As Formula 1 enters a new regulatory era in 2026, Williams will rely on Albon as a guiding figure in the team’s progress. With a first podium with Williams still on the horizon, Albon will be pivotal in turning consistent points finishes into breakthrough moments in 2026.

Struggles in Testing

It was a rocky start to the testing for Williams, with the team missing the first shakedown test in Barcelona at the end of January. The Grove based team experienced delayed in their programme. With the FW48 rumoured to have failed multiple FIA crash tests and be roughly 30kg overweight.

Once in Bahrain, the team were playing catch up. In the opening day, Williams banked 145 laps, the most of any team. While other teams struggled with reliability, Vowels was confident that the fundaments of the FW48 were up to scratch.

“However, the main things are this: what you can see is, for example, in all of your pressure tappings and aero data, is there anything that looks odd? And the answer to that is no, fundamentally”

Throughout testing, Williams showed promise of a strong 2026 campaign, slotting themselves into the higher end of the standings. However, following testing, Albon admitted the team is not where they wanted to be.

“We’ve learnt a lot, we did good mileage on week one of Bahrain. This week it was a little bit more performance orientated, but yeah, you know, we’re not where we want to be. We won’t get those days back, but I think we’ve got as much data as we need to”

While struggles were admitted, Albon believes the development of the car will improve quickly throughout the season.

2026 Predictions

With the start of the 2026 Season less than one week away, it’s hard to say where Williams will sit. With a slow start to testing, Williams are on the back foot heading to Melbourne.

However, Formula 1 has a habit of producing chaos, especially at the start of new regulations. With a new renewed energe, an experieced driver line up and a strong Mercedes engine, a podium may not be too far away for the Team.

While consistent points finishes are predicted for Williams, we are not likely to see them challenge Ferrari, Red Bull or Mercedes, who all brought impressive upgrades to Pre-Season testing. With all other teams not showing any standout results, it is likely Williams will stay in their fifth place in the Constructors Championships.
