Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee praised India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, stating that the former cricketer will help the team reach new heights. Gambhir took over as head coach after Rahul Dravid’s term ended following the T20 World Cup in 2024.
Gambhir, 42, recently guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third Indian Premier League (IPL) championship, having previously led them to their first two titles as captain. Lee commended Gambhir for his skill in bringing the team together and expressed confidence that the team is in good hands under Gambhir’s coachship.
“Gautam Gambhir has done an excellent job whenever he’s had a chance. Winning the Indian Premier League with KKR is a great example. He’s consistently performed at his best, able to bring his players together and create a strong team. He’s built a reliable foundation. As a player, he was outstanding, and his competitive spirit will benefit India. He’s proven himself on the international stage. With Gautam Gambhir as coach, India is in good hands. Congrats to Rahul for ending on a high note,” Lee said to the Times of India.
Gambhir will be the head coach of the Indian cricket team for the first time. He has previously coached teams like LSG and KKR in the IPL, guiding them to the later stages of the tournament each time.
As the head coach, Gambhir will need to manage both experienced and young players together, which is a new challenge. He will also be responsible for selecting the team for important events like the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship final in 2025.
Because Gambhir is known for being straightforward, he may make tough decisions about the future of some experienced players in the coming years. The new era with Gambhir as the head coach will start with a tour to Sri Lanka, where the Indian team will play three one-day matches and three T20 matches.
