The Indian cricket team has made their fans proud as they won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 under the head coach Rahul Dravid. After winning the match, veteran cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from the T20I format. After the big win, World Champions India are set to play 40 T20Is ahead of the WT20C 2026.
India won the T20 World Cup finals against South Africa by 7 runs after a thrilling face off between the two teams at Barbados. The men in blue went undefeated this season, winning all their matches and taking the trophy home.
Team India’s schedule gets more hectic
As team India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the team broke their 11 year curse of not winning any ICC trophies. The team won the ICC Champions Trophy back in 2013, and the ODI World Cup in 2011. After the team’s unfortunate defeat against Australia in the finals of the ODI World Cup 2023, the team came well prepared and won the T20 World Cup 2024.
The team is currently stranded in Barbados due to an upcoming hurricane that has closed off all routes for the country. As they look forward their felicitation ceremony in India, the team is also being included into several schedules to play T20 International matches ahead of the next T20 World Cup. World Champions India are set to play 40 T20Is ahead of the WT20C 2026.
India’s next T20I series is against Zimbabwe, at the former’s home venues. The team is also set to go on a tour to Sri Lanka after the Zimbabwe tour. As the senior players like Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav have opted out of the India tour of Sri Lanka, it’s highly possible that Shubman Gill will be leading the team.
Team India to play without Rohit, Virat and Rahul
29 June, 2024 did not only mark the end of a long and thrilling T20 World Cup 2024, but also brought a stop to the T20 Internationals careers of legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
India’s head coach Rahul Dravid is also now officially not going to be the team’s coach after this. However, his duty truly concludes after the Zimbabwe series.
While Hardik Pandya is speculated to be the next T20I captain of India. Considering his impressive performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 and his position as the team’s Vice Captain, the team is to be in good hands. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the senior players will be a part of India’s T20I squad in one way or the other.
As Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the form, a lot of cricketers appreciated the players and praised them.
