Former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Christopher Eubanks announced he will retire. Tennis Channel X post said Eubanks is leaving behind “a legacy of greatness.” The American did not win an ATP title and his best result was QF at Wimbledon. Tennys Sandgren retired last year after having won two ATP singles titles and made two ATP QFs at Australian Open but Tennis Channel did not salute Sandgren’s career nor mention his legacy of greatness. Maybe Martina Hingis was right when she said it’s an advantage now to be black in tennis.
Stefan Kozlov defeated Murphy Cassone 76 75 at ATP Champaign Challenger yesterday. The title earned Kozlov $14,200 and was his first ATP Challenger title in four years. His ranking jumped from 458 to 306. En route to the victory, Kozlov defeated Leo Borg, Tyler Zink, Darwin Blanch. Cedric-Marcel Stebe and Cassone. Kozlov broke his Lacoste shoe heel in the Blanch match, as it partially broke off at the end of the second set. Without a second pair of shoes, he ended up losing the second set in a tiebreaker, despite a match point on his serve, and then had to play the third set with the broken shoe – which he won 6-2. In the semi vs Stebe, Kozlov wore Nike shoes and won 60 40 ret. And in the final Kozlov changed his shoe again to New Balance, so he wore three different brand shoes in three matches, surely an unofficial ATP record. Marcelo Rios once wore adidas and Nike shoes and attire at the same tournament – 1997 Wimbledon – but he changed sponsors halfway through the tournament.
