Wrexham now hold firm interest in signing an “unbelievable” striker in the summer transfer window, and a formal approach is planned.
Kieffer Moore has proven to be a fantastic signing for the Reds, with the Welshman playing a major role in their Championship promotion push, chipping in with 11 goals and four assists in 31 appearances.
However, the striker wasn’t available for the most recent match, with Phil Parkinson’s side falling to a 2-1 defeat at home against promotion rivals Hull City, and the manager suggested the 33-year-old’s absence could be to blame for the loss.
Parkinson said: “I just felt there’s an element of maybe Kieffer getting injured, Dobbo suspended, a little bit maybe feeling sorry for ourselves. We’ve always had a real resilience about us here. We’ve had lots of games, lots of moments where people have said, ‘How are they going to come back from that setback?”
“And I just felt with the news about Kieffer and Libby [Cacace, also injured] and things like that, I just felt within the dressing room there was that little bit of flatness. But we’ve got to be bigger than that and we’ve got to come out fighting on Friday [against Swansea].”
Consequently, Wrexham may need to bring in additional strength in depth in attack this summer, particularly if they achieve promotion to the Premier League, and they now hold firm interest in signing Middlesbrough striker Sonny Finch.
That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states the Welsh side are now planning a formal approach to sign Finch, who is currently out on loan at National League North outfit South Shields FC, where he has caught the eye.
Alongside the Boro centre-forward, the Reds are also considering moves for Newcastle United’s Matheos Ferreira, as well as Sunderland duo Jenson Jones and Finn Geragusian, having been closely monitoring a number of youngsters from the North East.
“Unbelievable” Finch could be ready to play at higher level
Not long after arriving at South Shields during the January transfer window, manager Ian Watson suggested the 20-year-old marksman is too good to be playing in the sixth tier, saying: “Sonny is an unbelievable football player and the fact he’s with us at the football club is amazing.
“We know we are really fortunate to have him here because I know there was a lot of Football League interest in him before we managed to get it over the line.”
Alongside Wilson: Wrexham also neck and neck with Middlesbrough in race to sign “phenomenal” forward
The Reds are keen to strengthen in attack.
The Sunderland-born striker has made an impressive start to life at South Shields, scoring five goals in 11 matches, while he also has two goals and one assist to his name in three National League Cup games for Middlesbrough U21s this season.
Finch clearly has potential, but it would be a gamble for Wrexham to sign the Middlesbrough starlet this summer, given that he is yet to prove himself at a high level.
