WWE might’ve been keeping things fluid on the road to WrestleMania 42—but as of now, the top of the card is locked in, according to a January 11, 2026 update from Bodyslam.net.
Despite Drew McIntyre defeating Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship on the January 9, 2026 episode of SmackDown, the company now has firm plans in place for WrestleMania’s biggest matches. The report notes that the majority of the top matches are officially penciled in, barring any injuries or last-minute changes. And if that sounds familiar, it’s because WWE’s direction was already laid out months ago.
Back in November 2025 on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that WWE’s plan was still to run Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Championship, and CM Punk vs. Bron Breakker for the World Heavyweight Title on the Grandest Stage of Them All in Las Vegas.
“Punk getting pinned, that finish was there to tell the story,” Meltzer explained. “Like I said the other day, the whole thing when we come out of this match, the idea is we’re supposed to know WrestleMania — which is Cody and Roman, and Punk and Bron Breakker are the championship matches.”
Now with Drew McIntyre holding the Undisputed title after dethroning Cody Rhodes in a brutal Three Stages of Hell match, the big question is how WWE gets back to Cody vs. Roman—and whether McIntyre stays champion all the way to WrestleMania or becomes a transitional roadblock in Rhodes’ redemption arc. Either way, the creative fog is starting to lift—and Las Vegas is shaping up to host a massive WrestleMania.
Do you think WWE should stick to Cody vs. Roman III even after Drew McIntyre’s title win? Or is it time to shake things up? Drop your thoughts in the comments below.
