The game of cricket has seen many captains but none has impressed like ‘Captain Cool’ MS Dhoni. He is known for sharing wise counsel with his players in order to make sure he brings out the best from them regardless of whether it is an international competition or from a local club perspective.
Sometimes all you require is allowing another person to sort things by themselves. And this was exactly what Dhoni did to his fellow CSK team member Shardul Thakur as revealed by Harbhajan Singh, the former Indian bowler.
Having played with ‘Thala’ Dhoni and Thakur at the Chennai Super Kings for a while, Harbhajan spoke of when Shardul was getting a lot of boundaries but Dhoni never uttered any word to him.
“It was during a match we were playing for CSK. I remember being stationed at the short fine leg while MS Dhoni was doing the glove work. Shardul Thakur was bowling and Kane Williamson hit his first ball straight down for a boundary. The next delivery had the same length and Williamson repeated the same shot again. So, I approached MS and suggested to him that he should tell Shardul to change his length,” Harbhajan said in a conversation with ex-India Under-19 batsman Taruwar Kohli .
In Dhoni’s opinion, allowing Thakur to recognize his own errors and giving him a chance to correct them, was the best way to assist him.
As Harbhajan points out, Dhoni used to believe in the fact that one can’t be spoon-fed answers, and maybe person reflection is what helps you become your better self.
“MS told me ‘Paaji agar aaj bataunga na, yeh kabhi nahi seekhega (If I will tell him now, then he will never learn). Let him learn by himself’. That was MS Dhoni’s way,” said Harbhajan, adding that Shardul would however learn quickly if he conceded boundaries.
It is understandable why CSK has such a large fan following since players like Dhoni have been part of it consistently achieving success and bringing out their best selves.
