Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh praised Neeraj Chopra for winning the silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. On Thursday, Neeraj came in second in the men’s javelin throw final at Stade de France, with his best throw being 89.45 meters. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and Grenada’s Anderson Peters won the gold and bronze medals, respectively.
Neeraj, 26, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, couldn’t keep his title, but Yuvraj said that with the silver medal, he still made the whole country happy. Neeraj had a bad first throw but did very well in his second attempt.
Yuvraj, the player of the tournament in the 2011 Cricket World Cup, complimented Neeraj for his “determination and self-respect.”
“Proving yet again that his spirit to win is as unbreakable as his javelin’s flight. You have not only won a historic silver medal but have also brought a golden moment for every Indian heart. Here’s to the champion who reminds us all that even in silver, there lies a golden journey of perseverance and pride,” Yuvraj wrote.
Yuvraj also had kind words for Nadeem, who threw 92.97 meters and came in first. “Warmest congratulations to @arshadnadeem29 as well – for making history with an amazing 92.97m throw and breaking the Olympic record!” Yuvraj added.
Nadeem also broke the Olympic record previously held by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen, who threw 90.57 meters at the Beijing Games in 2008. Arshad felt nervous as he made a bad throw to start his competition.
But his second throw broke all records. He didn’t stop there and ended with another huge throw of 91.79 meters in his sixth and last attempt. Now that he has passed the 90-meter mark, Arshad plans to improve and aim for more than 95 meters.
