Bloody Jose Valenzuela Decisions Nunez, Bohachuk Split Decisions Butaev at Meta Apex Las Vegas

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Las Vegas, NV (February 5th, 2026)– In the three significant highlight bouts on an eight bouts card at Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, on a Dana White Zuffa Boxing card on Sunday, February 1, 2026:  a bloody former super lightweight champion Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela decisioned Diego Torres Nunez in 10 rounds; Middleweight contender and former World Boxing Council World Super Welterweight champion Serhii Bohachuk Won by a close split decision in the 10 rounds main event over game Radzhab Butaev; and former light heavyweight world title challenger Radivoje ‘Hot Rod’ Kalajdzic, down on the scorecards, came off the canvas in rounds one and four to knock down former World Light Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Govozdyk in the seventh round, then knocked him out at 2:47 of the seventh round in a major upset comeback thriller.

In the main event, the southpaw lightweight Jose Valenzuela, 15-3 with nine knockouts, Renton, Washington, won bloody 99-91 on all three scorecards over Diego Torres Nunez, 22-2 with 19 knockouts, Guadalajara, Mexico. Torres Nunez found some openings and landed some heavy shots early. This bout marked Valenzuela’s return to the lightweight division after a seven-year absence. Valenzuela fought two lightweight bouts in 2019 before moving up to super lightweight, where he held the World Boxing Association World Super Lightweight title from 2024 to 2025.

Valenzuela incurred a horrible cut over the right eye from a left hook thrown by Torres Nunez in round four. Despite this, Valenzuela survived and won nine rounds. Valenzuela threw counter left hands, and Torres Nunez, with no head movement, was ‘in the house’ but an easy target. Valenzuela had the better world-class experience. Torres Nunez had the better record.

I never got handouts. I’m just used to taking hard fights. Life’s been hard, and I don’t look for easy routes. My opponent…… I want to thank him. I appreciate him for taking this fight. He’s a dog (tough opponent). He only had one loss, and he showed why he’s so tough today,” said Valenzuela after the bout.

Bohachuk, 27-3 with 24 knockouts, Los Angeles, California, by way of Vinnytsia, Ukraine, fought a toe-to-toe thriller with Butaev, 16-2 with 12 knockouts, Indio, California, by way of Burtunay, Russian Federation. Bohachuk appeared the more active and assertive of the two combatants, with both men throwing power shots at close quarters till the final bell. Butaev tried to confuse Bohachuk by switching from orthodox to southpaw stance and back, but tired and was breathing with his mouth open during the stretch.

“This is a big win. I like it because my fans enjoyed it today. It’s my love (boxing). Everybody knows the situation in my country now. In my country it is a hard time now. My people need just a little good emotion. My people are cold, (do) not have light, have (a life of) war, and it’s a very, very bad situation. I want my people to be happy because I am Ukrainian. It’s very very (my win is big) motivation for me. I no agree with the scorecards (though). I won a minimum seven rounds.” Bohachuk won 96-94, 96-94 on two scorecards. Butaev was up 96-94 on the third scorecard. And so, one round decided Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing Paramount + main event, which was a close thriller from start to finish.

Kalajdzic, 30-3 with 22 knockouts, age 34, Pinella Park, Florida, by way of Serbia, at 6’3″ and 76 inches of reach, had a slight height and reach advantage over Gvozdyk, age 38, 21-3 with 17 knockouts, Oxnard, California, by way of Ukraine.  Gvozdyk struck first, scoring knockdowns in rounds one and four (and also scored what appeared to be a knockdown of Kalajdzic kneeling near the ring floor near the end of round five along the ropes), outboxed Kalajdzic thoroughly, and only lost one point on one scorecard going into round seven.

However, Kalajdzic found pinpoint timing and an immediate place for the overhand right hand at the start of round seven. Much like a 41-year-old Adonis Stevenson could not keep the pace with Gvozdyk in their World Boxing Council World Light Heavyweight title bout in December 2018 in the eleventh round of their bout at Centre Videotron in Quebec City, this time Gvozdyk slowed down and could not keep the pace with his younger opponent.

A series of overhand right hands to the head sent Gvozdyk down once. Gvozdyk beat the count. Gvozdyk then fell prey to a pinpoint right to the chin and close range, and went down and out, beating the count but staggering backwards all over the ring as he got up back into a corner holding onto the ropes, forcing referee Ray Corona to wave the bout off as a knockout as Gvozdyk’s legs and senses were suddenly gone and defeated by Father Time.

This loss at age 38 probably ended Gvozdyk’s hopes of securing another world title shot. Gvozyk’s best hope of winning this bout was to win early, like Rocky Balboa’s rematch with Mr. T in Rocky III. Gvozdyk had Kalajdzic down at 1:40 of round one, his right hand going over Kalajdzic’s low-hanging left. Gvozdyk used body shot combinations to send Kalajdzic to the canvas at 2:55 of round four. Gvozdyk had his opportunities to win, but was unable to capitalize and put his opponent away, letting Kalajdzic back into the fight.

Kalajdzic also earned the Zuffa Boxing ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus with this win.
