1 Patriots player in danger of losing starting job after OTAs

1 Patriots player in danger of losing starting job after OTAs

The New England Patriots have had a disquieting offseason. While they took advantage of their schedule and several breaks in the postseason to make it to the Super Bowl, they were overpowered by the Seattle Seahawks in the championship game. Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf has tried to keep the Patriots on track since that painful defeat, but head coach Mike Vrabel has been troubled by off-the-field issues involving a personal relationship with a media member, and that has caused a distraction.

Vrabel remains in his position as head coach, but he may face multiple questions when the team goes to training camp. That could cause distractions for the team.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the Patriots have made multiple moves in free agency and the draft to improve the team. They signed former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs in the offseason as well as left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker away from the New York Jets. Both Doubs and Vera-Tucker figure to start next season. Both players should be solid assets for third-year QB Drake Maye.

The biggest signing was former Chicago Bears free safety Kevin Byard. He led the league with 7 interceptions last season, and he could be a brilliant acquisition for the Pats. The also signed former Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones.

The Patriots selected offensive tackle Caleb Lomu of Utah and edge rusher Gabe Jacas of Illinois with their first two picks in the draft. Wolf and Vrabel are hopeful that both players will be able to contribute in the upcoming season.

Brown likely coming in trade with Eagles

The Patriots have already upgraded their wide receiver crew by bringing in Doubs, but it looks like there is more to come. New England has been rumored to acquire A. J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles.

The expectation is that the Patriots will complete a trade for Brown sometime in June. Brown spent his first three years in the NFL playing for Vrabel with the Titans and he has been with the Eagles for the last four years. He is widely respected for his toughness and his big-play ability around the league.

Both Byard and Doubs have indicated that he would be an excellent acquisition for the Patriots. “I have a ton of respect for him,” Doubs said, per Chad Graff of The Athletic. “He’s been a dude in this league for quite a long time. I understand that when he first got in the league, Vrabel was his coach. So again, I understand there are a lot of rumors going around. If he’s here, I’d love to have him here. ”

Brown has been one of the most consistent receivers in the NFL since moving on to Philadelphia. He had 78 receptions for 1,003 yards and 7 touchdowns last year, and that was his least productive season with the Eagles. Brown caught 88-1,496-11 in 2022, his first year with the team. He followed that with 106-1,456-7 in ’23 and 67-1,079-7 in 13 games in ’24.

The potential acquisition of Brown is bad news for Kayshon Boutte, because he could lose his position as one of the team’s go-to receivers. Boutte has not done anything wrong, but the signing of Doubs and the possible acquisition of Brown is clearly an indication that he is not going to be as vital as he was last season in the team’s passing game.

The Patriots have released Stefon Diggs after he led the team with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and had 4 TD receptions. Boutte may not have much of a role with the team after catching 33-551-6 last year. He was also the team’s leading receiver in the postseason as he caught 9-168-1 in four postseason games.

He did not attend the Patriots spring practice and he appears to know that he is more likely to be headed to Philadelphia in a trade for Brown than he is in playing for the Patriots.

Boutte has done nothing wrong and he made several eye-catching receptions for the Patriots last year. If the trade falls through, he could resume his role in the New England offense. However, the handwriting is on the wall and he will likely find himself in an Eagles uniform next season.

In addition to Boutte, the Patriots could be moving on from wide out DeMario Douglas. He figured to be a prominent asset in the New England offense. However, he was involved in slightly more than one-quarter of New England’s offensive snaps.

Douglas, a smaller wideout at 5-8 and 191 pounds, should be entering his prime at the age of 25. However, he was held to 31-447-3 last year and he could be wearing a different uniform next season.
